Week One: Presence

The program 40 Days to a Personal Revolution kicked off at the studio last Sunday. It has been such a great group of yogis who have joined in this journey together. This past week the theme for 40 Days to a Personal Revolution was presence. It was a week of discovery for me. I am definitely a fixer – and this week wasn’t about fixing any “problems” – it was about getting present to my habits. Oh boy, did I get present to my habits.

My habits ranged from negative self-talk to doing activities without thinking. My breaking point however this week was definitely on Friday night. I was going to a friend’s wedding over the weekend in Philadelphia. My husband and I had planned our trip to take a red eye flight due not wanting to take time off. I was rushing around Friday – working from 7 am to 4pm and then teaching from 5:30 to 6:45 at the studio – AND I wasn’t present enough to get my bags together before we left. My awesome husband packed my bag for me. When I got home Friday night, I quickly through my things together. We got to the airport and doh – I left my wallet at home. We were unable to reschedule our flight and we missed my friend’s wedding.

After going through a total melt down (a hysterical phone call to my friend who was the groom – and as per usual is calm as a cucumber), I got present to how I really am not present. I go from activity to activity and during that activity I am not actually there. I am in my head and thinking of my to do list of what I need to be doing next. This really makes me miss out on connection with those with me at that moment. When I miss out on connection, I am really missing out on living.

Now I am choosing to get present again. When I am being a physical therapist, really seeing the person I am working with and when I am teaching yoga choosing every moment to be present with my students. This is not something easy and if I continually choose to be present and choose to not judge myself when I am not, I will get to really connect with those I am with at the time. And connection is something I want in my life!

So…anywhere in your life you aren’t being present? Choose presence and get connected with those around you because the moment is fleeting!

Shine on,
Jackie
